Service Projects

We conduct a number of hands-on projects providing service to our community and its children

Adopt-a-Spot
Over the years, we have clean several different roadsides in Chesapeake.  Currently we clean Cedar Crossing Park (off Cedar Road next to the Los Gaviotas Shopping Center) once a quarter.  We also maintain a butterfly and hummingbird garden in the park.

Book 2 Movie
Book 2 Movie
A couple of years ago, the city asked our help to provide enrichment activities for the young people held in the juvenile jail.  One of our members developed the Book 2 Movie program.  Once a quarter we provide books, which they get to keep to the young people in the jail.  Two weeks later, a written report on the book is their ticket to a pizza party where we show the DVD of the book and discuss the differences between the book and the movie.  We started workig with the unit for 8 - 12 year old boys which was later shut down becuase there were not enough kids in the unit to justify its operation (a good thing).  Now we are working with the unti for 14 - 16 year old girls.  We hope to encourage reading and to show that some in the community care enough to give time to the project.

Kids Fishing Day
Each year, on what is usually the hottest day of the year, the seven clubs of Division 21 take about 300 kids to the James River Fishing Pier in Newport News for a day of educational activities, fishing, food, and fun.  The fishers come from community centers, church programs, YMCAs and a few by word of mouth.  The kids go through a series of educational exhibits provided by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Coast Guard Auxillary, local hospitals and more. Then it is out to the pier for some catch and release fishing and them back to shore for lunch.  Our members help keep the kids moving, bait hooks, untangle lines and serve lunch.  Kids Fising Day

Reading is Fundamental
Reading is Fundamental
We work with two Head Start preschool classrooms,  Willow Grove in rural Hickory and E R Jones in urban South Norfolk.  Once a quarter, we visit each classroom, read stories to the kids and give small presents,  Eahc child gets to pick a book to keep as thier own.  Our pre-Christmas visit is a big production.  Each child receives a stocking with thier nams on it containing books, toys and other treats.  We suspect that visit ruins the teachers plans for the rest of the day as all the kids want to do is play with the things in thier stockingss.
